Applied Petroleum Technology AS (APT) is a commercial organisation
offering high quality analyses and consulting to the oil industry within the
areas of
exploration and production and the disciplines of organic/inorganic geochemistry,
biostratigraphy, sedimentology, structural geology and basin modelling. The
company
was formed 1st March 2000 by the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE), one
of
Norways largest research organisations and 4 ex- employees of Saga Petroleum,
previously an independent oil company, now taken over by Norsk Hydro. The
intention was initially to offer services in organic geochemistry.
APT can draw on most of the resources of IFE, particularly with respect to
petroleum
technology, diagenetic studies, PVT and administrative support. The company
has a
mandate to market and sell all petroleum geological services previously offered
by
IFE in addition to its own specialist capabilities.
Since establishment in March 2000, APT has expanded into biostratigraphy,
sedimentology and structural geology, employing senior professionals with long
experience in oil- and service- companies. APT has also employed additional
technical staff, upgraded computing facilities and invested in new equipment
to meet
increasing demands for high quality data and challenging deadlines and has
entered
binding agreements with a number of associates.
APT currently has 12 employees (professional and technical), 6 associates and
draws
on ca 8 IFE staff on a regular project by project basis. During its short
existence
APT has provided services to 21 oil companies and 13 consultancy/research
organisations within the various disciplines and embracing exploration and
production
problems, concession rounds, well studies, surface geochemistry and none – exclusive
regional studies. Activities within geochemistry in particular have spanned
the globe.
APT purchased Saga Petroleums biostratigraphy and organic geochemistry
laboratories from Norsk Hydro. These have been relocated and expanded upon
and
are intimately incorporated in existing IFE laboratory facilities. New geochemistry
equipment has been procured to supplement the already impressive instrument
park
and new biostratigraphy laboratories built to streamline activities, provide
optimal
quality and increase capacity. The laboratory-, project- and sample- management
are
controlled using the WinLims software, modified to APTs requirements. All samples,
projects, results, data and reports are automatically tracked and traceable.
All results
are stored in a database and reports (tables, chromatograms range charts and
other
graphics) can be generated automatically. APT specialises in meeting customers
own
reporting/presentation requirements.
APT is the only service company in Norway offering this combination of geological
services in-house and with a staff boasting extensive oil-company experienc
APT has
a significant competitive edge. The ability to perform organic geochemical,
biostratigraphical and sedimentological services in the same laboratories
allows
significant synergies, reduces administration and costs, optimises sample
usage and
allows integrated interpretation possibilities. The ability to respond rapidly
to sudden
changes in analytical programmes as results unfold is another important benefit.
